Personality: Spade is the type of newsie to defend the weaker link in any situation, though he has his cocky smile and that irresistable pout at times, beneath the tough exterior is a sweetheart that only Ace and a few others get to see. He isn't a total ass and he isn't completely into himself but when the situation is normal and there is nobody he needs to stick up for, he thinks he is deserving of many things and he likes to believe he is a very important person. When it comes to Poet, his leader he is like her watchdog, he makes sure her borough is safe and if she is flying off the handle he will make it a point to know who pissed her off. Now Ace is his special case, when around her he can have his shy nervous side. Around her he makes sure she is always ok and if she isn't he finds out who messed with her and he'll rough them up if he has to. Ace brings out the sweet side of him that nobody else can bring out, he can tell her anything....except for the fact he still loves her, thats the hardest thing for him to try and admit to her again.
History: Spade grew up in Chicago, his parents were somewhat neglectful always forgetting he was around or even existed half the time. When he was 7 years old a terrible accident happened, the house went up in flames, his parents trapped inside and poor little Tommy was taken to his last living relative in New York. For awhile Tommy did well, he did good in his schoolings, he helped his aunt around the house, but he wondered if sometimes she knew the truth about what had happened to his parents. It began to dig away at him more and more and when he turned 12 years old, one night he just decided not to go back to his aunt's house, though she didn't neglect him like his parents had, he feared eventually she would.
Hitting the streets of Queens, he made his own for awhile, he would hustle the younger boys and some older in cards. He found a girl one day in Manhattan, she was younger than him, blond hair, blue eyes and quite the cocky attitude. He challenged the girl to poker and she surprisingly handed him his ass. They began to talk, her name was Ace and she began calling him Spade due to his fact he was good at cards, just not good enough to beat her at the time, and most of the time his hands held spades. He liked this girl, she was cute and outgoing, she spoke of selling papers and as he split ways with her, he went back to Queens in search of these newsies. He found the Queens Lodge house and explained he had nowhere to go, he was accepted and he did well as a newsie. He sought out Ace though and became good friends with her, at one point when he was 14 and she was 13 they had a little fling, they dated for a few weeks but never told anyone because it didn't end in the best of ways, nothing abusive, just they didn't know how to handle each other at that age. He still is best friends with Ace, telling her everything, even the truth about how he was the one to set fire to his parents home...only Ace and himself know that truth. He now continues selling his papes, protecting the weaker links and keeping his love for Ace hidden.
